Up-cycled Edible School Garden

Just like most populated areas of the world, Curacao too has a trash problem. In order to create a greater awareness and reduce pollution Muriel’s Kitchen and the fantastic sponsors, are proud to present the ‘Up-cycled Edible School Garden’ programme.
With this programme we strive to create an edible school garden using mostly recycled materials, according to the ‘ Reuse, Reduce and Recycle’ motto.

The ‘Up-cycled Edible School Garden’ project on Curacao is aimed at the special needs kids of the island. Experience has taught us that this specific group of kids has a affinity with innovative, creative thinking and nature. It is this group of special people who enjoy a hands-on challenge in order to become more self- sustainable. This way we want to awaken their creative minds even more, to inspire them and to increase their self-esteem by taking responsibility and create a stronger bond within the group.

Each class will enjoy planting seeds, taking care of seedlings and their very own vegetable patch at school. On a weekly basis the class will enjoy a hands-on session of 30 – 45 minutes. During these sessions the kids not only discover innovative ways to reuse materials and care for their plants, but they will also discover new tastes and textures during the ‘sense discovery’ sessions.
The entire duration of the project will be around 18 weeks, plenty of time to grow some juicy vegetables!

Fonds Kind & Handicap (previously Stinafo) is committed to the disabled and/or chronically ill youth who often don’t receive the needed assistance to develop, even in a well developed country like the Netherlands or Curacao.

The challenges often lie with the local governments as the budgets often don’t allow for this particular group.
Fonds Kind & Handicap is here to lend a helping hand where the governmental systems can’t reach, and so this Dutch foundation reaches out to all in special needs and assists in reaching for that dream! Fonds Kind & Handicap is proud to be sponsoring this Up-cycled Edible School Garden programme on Curacao.

“We are focused on the people and projects that are already doing good work and making a positive difference in their communities but that traditionally don’t receive funding from other sources. We want to make it possible for these people to continue to do their work.”
